He earned his PhD in 2014 from the University of Florence, focusing on clean engines for airplanes, and later became a Rolls-Royce Research Associate at Cambridge. Since 2018, he has been a Lecturer at Imperial and also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Spray and Combustion Dynamics. His research centers on sustainability and multiphase flows, especially electromagnetic interactions in nanofluids. Current projects include studies on soap bubbles, wildfires, noise propagation, and zero-carbon propulsion systems.

For over a decade, Rutaban has worked in Australian non-profit organisations at the intersection of research, policy, and advocacy in refugee law, migration, and human rights.
