Internships are one of the best ways for high school students to explore potential careers, build practical skills, and gain experience that stands out on university applications. Unlike traditional summer programs focused primarily on coursework, internships give students the opportunity to contribute to real projects, collaborate with industry experts, and explore their interests.

Here are 10 fall internships for high school students that combine mentorship, professional development, and hands-on learning opportunities.

  1. Academic Year Research Internship by Stanford University

In 2025, Stanford University’s Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine & Imaging (AIMI) launched a virtual internship during the academic year to give high school students hands-on research experience. Running virtually from September through June, the internship places students in small research groups focused on projects like data analysis, AI model development, scientific writing, or exploring the policy and challenges of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

You’ll meet weekly with Stanford student mentors, participate in expert speaker sessions, and learn about the research process through projects and collaborative work. At the end of the program, you and your group will do an oral presentation virtually or you can share your findings in person if you want to travel. All projects will be featured in a Student Showcase during Stanford Health AI week.

Cost: $4,8000

Location: Virtual

Application Deadline: September (tentatively, based on previous years)

Program Dates: September to June

Eligibility: Current high school students

Depending on the program, you may work on marketing campaigns, business strategy, research, product development, coding projects, or social impact initiatives with a team. One of the biggest advantages of Delve is the mentorship you’ll receive from industry professionals, giving you firsthand exposure to the industry and clarity about your career interests. At the end of the program, you’ll present your project to company representatives and receive an exclusive letter of recommendation.
